We had toyed with the idea of a general purpose bench
for a couple of years before we brought out
the housebench.
We wanted to achieve something that looked light,
almost floating, but that was tough enough to operate
in any utility room: bathroom, bedroom, hall.
Finally we came up with the distinctive housebench profile
which provides a very stong structure,
and with the cage suspended below, lends it that lightweight,
floating-box feel we were looking for.
Of course we could have called it the footbench to emphasise the funtion of the
foot bar, which provides an elevated rest for your foot while you tie your shoe lace (or dry your toes).
But we settled for housebench in the end because we thought it could be used
just about anywhere in the house.
Practically, it is useful in the hall (or bedroom) for storing house shoes at the point
where you put them on.
We use ours in the bathroom as a seat with hand towels stacked in the lower shelf.
